Let's Capture Something Extraordinary Together
Small owl. Wild character. Extraordinary photographic opportunities.
Step into the forests of Vancouver Island for an exclusive wildlife photography experience focused on one of British Columbia's most fascinating little predators — the Northern Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium gnoma).
Led by professional wildlife photographer and Marine Biology Specialist Jos Krynen, this private, field-based workshop combines wildlife photography techniques, natural history, and ethical wildlife observation.
Course overview
This personalized photography workshop is designed for photographers who want to improve their ability to photograph small, elusive birds of prey in their natural environment.
Rather than working from a fixed itinerary, each session is tailored to seasonal conditions, owl activity, available light, and the photographer's experience.
What you'll learn
01. Finding and understanding pygmy owls
Learn about habitat preferences, hunting behaviour, vocalizations, seasonal activity, and how to recognize signs of their presence.
02. Camera settings and field techniques
Master autofocus, exposure, shutter speed, ISO, and long-lens stability when photographing small birds in challenging forest light.
03. Composition and creative photography
Explore natural framing, background separation, eye-level perspectives, environmental portraits, and techniques for capturing expressive wildlife images.
04. Ethical wildlife photography
Understand respectful viewing distances, signs of stress, and how to photograph owls without disturbing hunting, nesting, or other natural behaviours. No baiting or playback is used to attract owls.

What makes this experience special?
This is more than a photography outing. It is an opportunity to develop your fieldcraft, understand the ecology of these remarkable owls, and refine your photographic skills with personalized guidance.
Because Northern Pygmy Owls are wild and their presence is unpredictable, sightings and photographic opportunities cannot be guaranteed. Every workshop places the welfare of the birds and their habitat first.
